Most organizations, especially in health care, struggle year after year, to solve the same problems - problems like silos, low engagement, conflict, burn out and so on. And most of the time they fail to make the improvements hoped for. We spend critical time and resources on new process improvement initiatives, checklists, procedure updates - and over and over, while we sometimes see an initial improvement, we fall back into the same problems.
Most healthcare professionals choose our line of work because we want to help people—to save lives and improve health. Yet in the current environment of intense scrutiny, bureaucracy, changes to cost structures and reimbursement, and staff shortages, we struggle to uphold this sense of purpose and patient focus in daily operations.
Why do healthcare organizations and professionals struggle with frustration, burnout, quality outcome and patient safety deficiencies, and process improvement fatigue, and so on? Because these issues are merely symptoms of a deeper problem that we do not see. That problem is an "inward" mindset, a way of seeing others that creates problems we do not see.
